I've never met a nice South African...

Hate figure: Pietersen

That headline is not strictly true, I have met several nice people from South Africa both in England and out here in Johannesburg. On balance the people have been lovely. However, unlike the Ashes, when the banter was good natured and friendly, out here it seems tinged with spite.

Now, this is not sour grapes after yet another woeful day for England. We appear to be heading for a conclusive defeat at some point tomorrow and I actually think a drawn series is a fair result.

Yet, the bile spilled towards Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott today - both seen as traitors in South Africa - was an eye opener. Yes, I know Australian fans can be vicious with their sledging of England players Down Under. This, though, seemed different. It was unrelenting, spiteful, hate-filled filth.

For that reason alone it would be great to see KP silence the vociferous Wanderers crowd with a century tomorrow - even if it is in a losing cause.

The name Daryl Harper has been at the forefront of many headlines these past few days and the error-prone official again covered himself in ignominy today by twice overturning England wickets. Aren't referrals meant to change the on-field umpire's decision when there is conclusive proof? So why was Graeme Swann's first 'dismissal' of AB De Villiers overturned? It's baffling and believe me the locals are loving it after the whole ball-tampering controversy.

Despite the unsavoury barbs towards Pietersen and Trott, which were to be expected at a packed Wanderers, the South African cricket watching experience has been great. It's hot here, if a little rainy at times, and people - both English and South African have been friendly on the whole.

I'm sad that tomorrow will probably be the last day. Even with the predicted afternoon showers there is far too much for England to do to save this match.
